French wine has a history dating back at least 2,600 years, the Romans did much to spread viticulture across the land they knew as Gaul. France is currently the world's number one producer of wine by volume. The top wine regions are Alsace, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Loire, Rhone Valley, Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon.
